Journey Through Meditation
What is meditation? The official definition is “practice in which an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.” Yes, I agree but I want to describe and explain how meditation is a journey of thoughts and actions for yourself.
I did not start meditating or truly understand what it meant for someone. I wasn’t sure how to start or who to go to for any questions I had. I was able to do personal research and lots of online resources that helped explain different aspects of meditation and how different religions and traditions used meditation. I really began to understand what meditation was, as I was moving away from religion into my spirituality and becoming comfortable with who I was and what I believed in. One thing that I was certain of was that I couldn’t jump into meditation without understanding at least the basics and it’s different significance for other people. Knowing more about meditation allowed me to find my own way to use meditation for my benefit.
I started by asking others who already meditated and they gave me some tips to start. I had to struggle first to understand its true power and how it would affect me. After more research I finally began taking it seriously and it was a journey. At first it was very hard to focus or at least I thought it was something that needed to follow a strict structure. I quickly realized that wasn't the case when it was not working the way I wanted to or needed it to. Then I went from trying to do it strictly and “correctly” to going with the flow and letting my thoughts flow. A lot of it had to do with how mentally exhausted I was and by just letting thoughts flow without having to control them helped me a lot.
The entire process of getting to where I am today, was a journey in itself and now that I am where I am, it makes me very happy. I now know that I can’t control certain things and that’s okay if it means I am able to grow and move forward as a person. By introducing meditation into my life I was able to find a different out and balance that has helped me come a long way. It has helped me develop more patience and has answered some of the questions I had about my spiritual beliefs.
